Thomas Lewton: How did you discover that large swathes of the ocean are darkening?
Tim Smyth: We first approached this issue from an unexpected direction. For the past decade, I’ve been working with Tom Davies, a marine conservation scientist at the University of Plymouth, to understand the impacts of artificial light pollution at night.
